Faculty Career Champions

The 2020 Faculty Career Champions have been selected!  For the past four years, Career & Professional Development has asked students what faculty members have made a significant contribution to their career and professional development path.  This year over 400 students nominated 247 unique Faculty Career Champions!  See complete list of all nominees here.

After reviewing all of this year’s student nominations, the selection committee from career development leaders and past award winners from across campus are recognizing three Faculty Career Champions. Year after year, we are so appreciative of the dedicated faculty at DU who go above and beyond in helping students reach their Career Achievement Milestones.

Adjunct Faculty Career Champion

This year, Career & Professional Development wanted to also acknowledge an Adjunct Faculty Career Champion.  Many of our adjunct faculty currently work in their industry and integrate real world example projects into the classroom.  There were several adjunct faculty members nominated and one in particular received several nominations.  Martina Porter, Adjunct Professor with the Graduate School of Social Work, stood out with many students stating that she goes above and beyond with advice, skill building and challenging her students at many levels. View Martina’s student nomination video here.

Undergraduate Faculty Career Champion

The Undergraduate Faculty Career Champion for this year goes to Jack Buffington, Program Director/Assistant Professor for the Supply Chain Management program in the Daniels College of Business and the Denver Transportation Institute in University College.  Jack had several nominations stating that he integrates career development into the classroom and has had many career related conversations with students throughout the academic year.  View Jack’s student nomination video here.

Graduate Faculty Career Champion

The Graduate Faculty Career Champion has been awarded to Michael Talamantes, Clinical Associate Professor with the Graduate School of Social Work.  Michael’s dedication and passion for career development was quite evident in the student nominations we received.  See what Michael’s students had to say in his nomination video.

This is an interesting year because of COVID-19 and we are unfortunately unable to have a fall quarter celebration for all of the nominees.  The Faculty Career Champion award ceremony will be moved to later in the academic year so we can celebrate all of the nominees in person.

If you are a DU student and have a faculty member that has made an impact on your internship, career or post-graduation goals,  please nominate the faculty member for the 2020-21 award!
