The Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness located on the DU campus is home to a number of world class venues for a variety of campus and community programs.
Position Summary
This position will facilitate youth programming activities at the Ritchie Center and the University of Denver campus, including School Days Off day camp programs
Essential Functions
- Support the division of Athletics and Recreation in the execution of its youth programming opportunities
- Provide excellent customer service for all Ritchie Center participants and customers
- Recognize and respond effectively and efficiently to emergencies
- Help maintain a clean and safe environment
- Able to work both individually and as part of a team
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience working and communicating with children ages 5-12 and their families
- Ability to use tact, diplomacy and conscientiousness when working with children and families
- Initiative, follow-through and reliability
- Adaptable and flexible
- Ability to be physically active and high-energy during programming
Required Qualifications
- American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification, or willingness to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification
- Employees working in licensed child care programs will be required to complete additional background checks as required by Colorado child care licensing (paid for by the University of Denver)
- Passion for working with youth in a recreation/sport setting
- Specific sport knowledge or experience (preferred)
- Experience instructing sports and/or working with youth (preferred)
Work Environment
- Indoor & Outdoor Locations (approximately 75% indoor, 25% outdoor)
- Variable weather conditions & sun exposure when outdoors
- Variety of sporting venues including indoor swimming pool, tennis court, grass & turf fields, gymnastics gym, climbing wall and ice skating rink.
Physical Activities
- Walking to move throughout Ritchie Center & field spaces (2+ miles/shift)
- Playing sports & active games
- Standing/being physically active for majority of shift
- Swimming (dependent on position)
- Ice Skating (dependent on position)
- Lifting equipment/children up to 50 lbs
Supervision and Training
Youth Programs Camp Coaches will receive thorough training on safety, risk-management, behavior management, group management, activity supervision, sport instruction as well as program systems and processes prior to program start. Ongoing training and feedback will be provided throughout the program year. Youth Programs Camp Coaches will work under the supervision of the Youth Programs Managers and Youth Programs Program Coordinators and will receive ongoing support from their leadership team.
Compensation and Benefits
This position is eligible for a federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students. Students will be paid $17.50-19.00/hr with the opportunity for yearly increases, dependent on performance.
In compliance with Colorado’s Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA), non-benefited employees accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
