Essential Functions
• Engage non-native speakers of the target language in basic conversation
• Lead weekly one-on-one and small group learning sessions
• Encourage effective learning and study strategies
• Explain concepts from a peer’s perspective
• Offer grammar review and pronunciation practice
• Participate in a language partner orientation and training sessions throughout the year
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Fluency in a non-English language, preferably in a language that is less commonly taught in the U.S.
• Intermediate-Advanced level proficiency in English
• Initiative, follow-through and reliability
• Adaptability and flexibility
Required Qualifications
• Current DU undergraduate or graduate student, located in the Denver area
• Must demonstrate fluency in the target language
• Must be able to communicate efficiently about the target language in English
• Must inclusively share about the target culture(s)
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience assisting peers or students with language concepts such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, conversation practice, etc.
Working Environment
• Language Partners meet one-on-one or in small groups on campus with their students in small group study rooms or other classrooms. These rooms can be scheduled by the Language Partner or by the CWLC Associate Director.
• Occasionally, due to students’ schedules, Language Partners may be asked to conduct class sessions via Zoom.
• Language Partners and their students are requested to set and commit to a regular meeting schedule for class sessions.
Physical Activities
• Able to move about campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
• Able to sit in front of a computer for periods of up to one hour if meeting with students via Zoom.
Compensation and Benefits
This position is eligible for a federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students, including international students. Students will be paid $19/hr. This position requires 2-8 hours per week for fall, winter, and spring quarters, on weekdays, with flexibility in scheduling. As a condition of employment, all working Language Partners are required to attend weekly check-ins (approximately 30-45 minutes per meeting) with the CWLC Associate Director.
In compliance with Colorado’s Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA), non-benefited employees accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
