Required Qualifications
• Current DU undergraduate or graduate student, located in the Denver area
• Demonstrable fluency in the target language
• Able to use English to clearly explain the target language
Preferred Qualifications
• · Experience teaching, coaching or otherwise working with people who are learning a new subject or skill
- Experience assisting peers or students with language concepts such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, conversation practice, etc.
Working Environment
The Language Center at Anderson Academic Commons is located in an open public area next to the Math Center and Writing Center. Tutors will work at tables in this open space with their tutees. The Language Center is open from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. Other tutor(s) and front desk assistants will also be working at nearby tables during shift hours. Tutors must be able to focus, bring order and maintain conversations in a sometimes noisy area. They should also be comfortable with occasional interruptions and maintain a positive customer service attitude during busy periods.
Physical Activities
- Able to sit and maintain focus for up to one hour at a time, whether in person with tutees or in front of a computer
- Occasionally required to move about campus for training events or to transport objects (books) up to 10 pounds for short distances
Compensation and Benefits
This position is eligible for a federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students, including international students.
Students will be paid at a rate determined by level of study and experience, starting at $18.29/hr. with the opportunity for increases, dependent on performance and length of service.
This position allows tutors to work around their class schedule in order to set their hours each quarter. Tutors must be available at least 4 hours each week during the following times: Monday-Thursday 2pm-6pm. (Note: all tutoring sessions are currently drop-in sessions, but due to COVID-19 or other needs, the CWLC may have different policies regarding in-person vs. online tutoring during different quarters.)
In compliance with Colorado’s Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA), non-benefited employees accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
