Library Research Assistant
Westminster Law Library, Sturm College of Law
The Westminster Law Library seeks applications for the Library Research Assistant program. We are seeking 2L, 3L, or LLM students for Summer 2024 to provide short-term research assistance to faculty members. Successful Library Research Assistants may have the opportunity to remain on board for the 2024/2025 school year. Library Research Assistants will work with various faculty members on a variety of research projects and will receive personalized research guidance from reference librarians. Pay is $18.29/hour. Potential projects include:
Essential Functions
- Research legal and related topics, using traditional and electronic resources;
- Research non-legal topics using government and academic resources;
- Locate and analyze statistical data and information from other disciplines;
- Provide blue-booking and cite-checking services;
- Evaluation, analysis, and summarizing of research findings;
- Scan physical resources into electronic format;
- Upload documents and metadata on faculty scholarship to digital repositories; and
- Prepare legal memos, bibliographies, or compile findings using word processing or spreadsheet applications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be a currently enrolled second- or third-year law student in good standing at the Sturm College of Law;
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word;
- Possess demonstrated aptitude for research and analysis, including proficiency with Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Bloomberg Law databases;
- Possess an ability to work independently; and
- Ability to take on at least 10 hours per week of work, 5 of which must be performed in person within the library between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a currently enrolled law student in good standing at the Sturm College of Law;
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Possess demonstrated aptitude for research and analysis;
- Possess an ability to work independently; and
- Ability to work 10 hours per week of work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel;
- Completion of the Westminster Law Library’s Certificate of Legal Research.
Working Environment
- 5 hours per week must be completed in person within the library’s Technical Services open-office style workspace. This requires the ability to sit at a computer for extended periods with periodic interruptions by individuals utilizing the mail service and seeking office supplies.
- Up to 5 hours per week may be performed remotely using the employee’s own computer and internet service.
Physical Activities
- Sitting at a computer for extended periods.
- Periodic use of the library’s physical resources such as casebooks, treatises, and statutes. This requires maneuvering the library stacks and carrying items up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to use a scanner and photocopier to make physical or digital copies of physical resources..
