Using AI in your Job Search

Did you know that AI can be an incredibly useful tool for your job search? You can use ChatGPT and a myriad of other digital tools to find interesting opportunities, review resumes and cover letters, and prep for interviews. Over the coming weeks, we’ll publish blog posts on each of these uses for AI. First, it’s important to consider several caveats for using AI in the job search.

The first consideration is whether the employer is open to applicants using AI tools. Right now, government agencies are against applicants using AI to write their application materials; in the private sector there’s more variance, some are OK with it, some aren’t, and some actively want you to demonstrate your ability to use AI tools. You must always ensure that everything you submit still maintains your voice and that the material the AI writes is true and appropriately completes the required task. Lastly, it’s important to remember that anything you put into an AI tool like ChatGPT becomes part of its algorithm going forward – so be careful about inputting personal data like a resume!

Of course, using AI for these processes is not the end all be all. ChatGPT doesn’t know what you’re really meant to become, Bard can’t always find your dream job from a Google search, and no program can tell your story better than you can tell it yourself. For all the help that AI can’t provide we would love to see you in our office! We have appointments available for career exploration, internship searching, resume review, and much more that you can sign up for through PCO.
