Boren Awards

Boren Awards fund language study by U.S. undergraduate and graduate students (and research for graduate students) in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Students can apply for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative or select/design their own study abroad program. All Boren Awards-funded programs must include language study as a core element for the duration of the grant. Languages should be studied in a preferred country where they are spoken by a significant portion of the population. Students must plan an overseas language study program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

Boren Awards promote long-term linguistic and cultural immersion. Proposed programs of two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants proposing overseas programs of at least 25 weeks’ duration. Successful Boren recipients are required to complete at least one year of federal service. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a longer-term commitment to government service than the one-year federal service requirement.

Campus deadline is December 11, 2024.
