About the Role
As a key member of the International Team, the Manager of International Programming, Europe will play a leading role in the development and execution of programs that will inspire, empower, and connect the next generation of civic, business, and social sector leaders with the values, skills, and opportunities they need to build more prosperous, secure, and inclusive communities in Europe and around the world. The Manager of International Programming, Europe will be based in Washington, D.C. and report to the Deputy Chief International Officer.
The Manager of International Programming, Europe will be responsible for achieving the following outcomes within the first year:
Create a Strategy for International Programming in Europe
- Develop a 5-year strategy for the Foundation’s work in Europe, consistent with our theory of change, with quantifiable impact goals.
- Lead the Foundation’s efforts to design a one-year leadership development program for emerging leaders in Europe, combining a minimum of one in-person convening with rigorous online training and mentorship in the lead up and follow-through of in-person convenings.
- Develop a budget and resourcing plan for Europe programming.
Execute Programming that Lifts the Next Generation of Emerging Europe Leaders
- Launch the Obama Foundation Leaders program for Europe, overseeing the effort to design a 4-7 day, in-person convening for ~200 emerging leaders focused on leadership development and training.
- Build the infrastructure, create the agenda, set the schedule, and recruit speakers for one year’s worth of virtual engagement with the selected cohort of emerging leaders.
- Develop a rigorous approach to track the impact of programming on participants with both qualitative and quantitative assessments of our program.
- Develop an alumni engagement strategy to ensure program alumni stay actively connected to the Foundation and each other after their program ends.
Foster Productive Partnerships to Leverage Impact
- Identify and develop a strategy for engaging key partners—within civil society organizations, government, private sector, foundations, donors, and academic institutions—to help deliver on the Foundation’s programming strategy in the region.
The ultimate aim of the Manager of International Programming, Europe is to achieve the outcomes listed above. In order to achieve those outcomes, we expect that the Manager of International Programming, Europe will:
- Work closely with the leadership of the International Team to creatively design and refine the objectives and desired outcomes for the Europe Leaders program and subsequent regional programming
- Collaborate with a broad set of organizations and individuals, both inside and outside of the region, to build networks that can support the execution of shared strategies and programming
- Coordinate with and leverage the assets of other Foundation teams—Digital, Program, Communications, and Development—to drive programs to optimal outcomes
- Successfully execute project management functions to help the International Team execute both short- and long-term objectives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Maintain a detailed budget for all Europe programming
- Manage internal and external collaborators, such as contractors, consultants, and interns, to facilitate the timely and successful completion of delegated activities and deliverables
- Be available and willing to travel to Europe, possibly several times each year
- Contribute to the Foundation’s efforts to design detailed trainings for sub-categories of the broader regional leadership programs, focusing on issue based themes and/or geographic cohorts
- Ensure Europe programming is consistent with the broader international strategy and programming of the Obama Foundation
- Design an application process for the Leaders program, with the capacity to review and select ~200 participants from among the thousands of applications
- Become a trusted representative and steward of the Obama Foundation’s mission and programs to partners, individuals, and donors in Europe
- Deep and demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the Obama Foundation, with a history of working to create positive social impact
- Significant experience developing and managing social impact or leadership programs in the developing world for hundreds of participants, ideally in Europe, focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, civil society, and/or skill-building
- Broad network of contacts in Europe among individuals, organizations, and government entities that work on leadership programs for young and emerging leaders
- Experience developing applications and managing application processes for leadership programs with thousands of applicants
- Experience creating virtual curriculum and understanding of digital mapping required for social, web, email, etc. recruitment and engagement
- Proven ability to collaborate with colleagues responsible for the logistical elements of event planning and program management
- Experience starting and/or managing extensive and active alumni networks
- Track record of designing strategies that target specific goals and executing effectively on those strategies
- Experience developing and maintaining multi-million dollar budgets
- Exceptional project manager: effectively plans and manages long-term projects and competing priorities while communicating effectively with others to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
- Creative problem-solver, with a track record of designing new systems and innovative processes that achieve greater impact
- High emotional intelligence, self-motivated, results-oriented, and willing to roll up their sleeves with others to get the job done, however small
- Demonstrates the ability to quickly and proficiently understand and absorb new information; can sift between important details and noise to act decisively with a focus on the end result
- Exceptional verbal and written communicator, comfortable making presentations, excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, strong Powerpoint design skills
- Good sense of humor, even under pressure, and a high degree of flexibility/adaptability to succeed in an ambitious, start-up environment.
