Job Description
The AI, Learning, and Intelligent Systems Group in the NREL Computational Science Center has an opening for a graduate student researcher in Transportation Systems with special emphasis on wireless communication modeling and simulation for traffic system. The researcher will assist in developing mathematical wireless communication models, implementing the wireless communication models in a microscopic traffic simulation tool, and calibrating the models with field data.
We are looking for a dynamic, motivated researcher with a strong technical background and an interest in the mission of NREL. The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL staff and researchers to design and implement wireless communication simulation tools to evaluate the effects of Cooperative Driving Automation on traffic network emissions, energy efficiency and safety.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist in developing V2V, V2I, and V2X wireless communication models.
- Assist in developing a simulation tool to incorporate these wireless communication models into Aimsun microscopic traffic simulations.
- Calibrating the wireless communication models with experiment data from the testbed.
- Author, present and assist in the preparation of technical papers, reports and conference proceedings on topics related to data-driven traffic modeling and simulation and their application.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Candidates should have demonstrated interest or experience in the field of wireless communication modeling and simulation.
- Candidates must have a strong foundation in coding.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications will be considered a bonus:
- Candidates should have experience with C++ & Visual Studio
- Candidates should have experience with microscopic traffic simulators such as Aimsun.
- Candidates should have experience with wireless communication modeling tools such as NS3.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $49,100 – $78,600
