As we create an inclusive, student-oriented, learning-focused and career-ready community, we understand supervisors play a pivotal role. Research on student employment shows that compared with their peers who work off-campus, students who work on-campus have higher academic success rates, deeper connections to the campus community, and higher persistence rates. In this way, supervisors can be “retention agents” as they develop and support student employees.
We’re here to support you in your role as a supervisor. Check out the resources below as you recruit, hire and develop your student employees. If you have questions that are not answered below, check out our FAQ page or contact Student Employment at stuemp@du.edu.
Recruit
PCO is DU’s job board for students and it’s a one stop shop for students. Students will find student employment positions, internships, & full-time opportunities on the site. They can also make appointments with their career advisor and register for career & professional development events. This job board is a great tool to advertise your position. Check out how to post student employment positions in PCO here.
Hire
Human Resources and Financial co-own the hiring process, depending on the student’s funding source- departmental or work study. Below are the responsibilities for each function area. The Hiring Checklist guides you through the hiring process for all student employees.
Human Resources
Hiring student employees is managed by Shared Services in Human Resources. There are numerous resources on the HR Knowledge Base website to help you navigate hiring student employees. You can also find resources on managing time cards in PioneerTime. Please reach out to sharedservices@du.edu with any questions.
Work Study
Work study is a need-based financial aid award that allows students to work on campus or with an approved off-campus employer to earn money. Students who have work study are paid wages through this financial aid award rather than through departmental funds.
When hiring student employees with work study funding, Financial Aid is looped into the process. For more information on work study eligibility for your student employees, visit the undergraduate and graduate work study pages within the Office for Financial Aid or reach out to workstudy@du.edu.
F-1 and J-1 international students are not eligible for Federal Work Study positions.
