It’s recruiting season once again!
DU Career Services recently hosted over 100 employers on campus to kick off the 2015-16 academic year with a networking luncheon. Attendees learned about upcoming employers events on the DU campus. They also heard a presentation on workforce readiness for entry level workers and what that actually means. There is a big disconnect between what academia and employers are saying regarding the skills necessary to hit the ground running as a recent college graduate. For example, a recent survey, conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education and Marketplace, revealed that 53% of employers report difficulty in finding qualified grads. They lacked basic workplace proficiency skills such as adaptability, communication skills, and the ability to solve complex problems. In contrast, Inside Higher Ed’s 2014 survey of chief academic officers found that 96% of higher education faculty & staff stated they were doing a good job preparing students for success in the workforce.
Once the audience heard the presentation, there was a panel discussion consisting of employers from Arrow Electronics, Colorado Non-Profit Association, Andrew Hudson’s Jobs List, and DISH Network. The panel was very interactive with audience participation. Some key take-a-ways are to hire students who have internship or co-op experience, provide mentors for new hires, and realize that millennials like and need feedback. Technology is also effecting communication skills as this digitally engaged generation may need additional time to learn effective interpersonal communication skills.
It was also noted that recent graduates need to visit their career centers early on in their academic career. Students should be required to take career exploration and planning courses that would also provide employer access to the classroom so students can hear first-hand what skills they need to develop before they graduate.
